There are 27 stars, 12 rashis and 9 planets. All the three are fit into the Rashi Chakram. Each star has an Adhipathi (owner) and that birth star is governed by that janma dasha, meaning, at the time of birth, depending on the star, the owner of star is determined and that owner's dasha starts/rules. The 27 stars are further divided into 4 steps per star, giving rise to 108 unique stars and steps.
Now depending upon that owner's position in the Rashi chakram, as to debilitated, owned or exalted, bad, neutral or good periods of time begin. The duration of the owner's time period depends on the balance dasha period that is calculated depending on how much degrees the owner has already covered.
Every planet (owner) has a dasha or time period to rule over, and every other planet takes on a sub-period within that major period and influences life to a lesser extent. The amount of time a major dasha runs depends on the planet, each planet has been alloted a certain number of years to rule over, by the vedic shaashthras.
The periods of planetary rule are as follows:-
Ketu - 7 years
Shukra - 20 years
Surya - 6 years
Chandra- 10 years
Kuja - 7 years
Rahu - 18 years
Guru - 16 years
Shani - 19 years
Budha - 17 years
This gives a total of 120 years that is taken as a period of a normal human life and that life is governed by major dashas of each of the nine planets, and the other planets take on a sub-period role during that time. This 120 years period is known as Vimshothari Dasha system in astrology.
Depending on an individual's planetary disposition at birth, the planets influence a combination of good effects and bad effects.

There is a pattern that we notice, each planet owns exactly 3 stars, there are 9 planets and 27 stars. Each star ownership is 5 rashis apart, exactly.
Now depending upon that owner's position in the Rashi chakram, as to debilitated, owned or exalted, bad, neutral or good periods of time begin. The duration of the owner's time period depends on the balance dasha period that is calculated depending on how much degrees the owner has already covered.
